Four wine connoisseurs aimed to pass the wine world’s extremely difficult Master Sommelier examination which was shown in the American documentary movies, ‘Somm’ and ‘Somm: Into the Bottle’. It followed the journey of Dustin Wilson, Ian Cauble, Brian McClintic, and DLynn Proctor and their intense trials in a three-year journey through six countries in hopes to attain the prestigious certification.
Somm changed the lives and careers of these four men. It also uncorked the secretive world of the Master Sommelier examination to the rest of the world. The documentary allowed the subjects, particularly DLynn Proctor, to take their skills to new heights and make an indelible mark in the wine industry.
After the grueling experience in ‘Somm,’ DLynn Proctor continued his studies and then went on to become a winemaking ambassador for mega Australian winemaker, Penfolds. The experience helped him share his knowledge about food and wine through TV show guest appearances, magazine interviews, and traveling to many places for speaking engagements. He also trained with top winemakers in California, Washington, Texas, South Australia, and Italy to broaden his knowledge in winemaking and sensory tasting. Proctor also became an adjunct lecturer at the San Francisco Wine School and also served as a wine show judge at some of the world’s famous universities and wine shows. To add to his growing list of experiences, he had also worked for Michelin-starred chefs, retail/web sales, and fine and rare wine brokerage.
Throughout the years, Proctor was able to use his skills and knowledge as a sommelier and in 2008, he was named as the “Best Sommelier in America” by Wines & Spirits Magazine. In the same year and in 2009, he also became a finalist in The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Société Mondiale du Vin ‘Best Sommelier in America Competition’. By 2011, Proctor had been named to the National RUDD scholars. This opened doors for Proctor as he had been featured in many publications such as Huffington Post and The New York Times and in wine enthusiast websites such as Decanter and Wine Spectator.
In 2014, Proctor was also named ‘Top 40 under 40’ in Wine Enthusiasts.
With 15 years of experience under his belt, DLynn Proctor has become a prominent figure in the beverage and hospitality industry. Armed with overflowing capability, he came to Fantesca Estate & Winery with an extensive knowledge of sales, marketing, and strategy and became the winery’s director in 2018.
Fantesca’s proprietor, Duane Hoff, believes Proctor will greatly help in marketing their wines and expanding the winery’s relationships due to the latter’s former experience of representing upscale brands in the world. As the director of Fantesca, Proctor’s role is not only to introduce Fantesca wines to enthusiasts but also to give winemaking insights and tasting notes.
